Potter’s Armband Decision

Here are three options for the manager to consider.

After the red card captain Lewis Dunk picked up against Crystal Palace, manager Graham Potter has to decide who will lead the side on the pitch in the next three games.

Lewis Dunk will be absent for the Seagull’s next three games. Brighton and Hove Albion will face tricky tests against West Brom, Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley. There appears to be three choices from fans as to who they would like to see take the armband for the next three Premier League fixtures.

ADAM WEBSTER

The defender would be the most natural replacement for Dunk in terms of keeping the captaincy in the same position. The 25-year-old has played every minute of the league so far this season and has impressed ever since he was signed from Bristol City in 2019. The towering defender is an imposing player on the pitch.

Webster could use his ability to impose himself on the team. A captain should be able to lead the team on and off the pitch, something Webster would be able to and would be a very wise option for Potter to consider.

ADAM LALLANA

The new addition to the squad could be handed the responsibility of captaincy, despite only making five appearances for the club, Lallana is one of the most experienced players at the club. The former England international has made 201 appearances in the Premier League, which is more than Brighton and Hove Albion as a club.

The passion Lallana has shown since joining the south-coast side has been welcomed by Brighton fans. The other benefit Potter would have by making the 32-year-old captain is the fact he plays in the midfield. This positioning would allow the captains voice to be heard by the whole team, sometimes the message can fade before it reaches the attackers, if the captain is a defender.

BEN WHITE

The wildcard option could be to give the armband to rising star Ben White. The defender was one of the best in the Champions last season during his loan spell with Leeds United. White impressed so much that the Yorkshire side made multiple approaches to sign the youngster.

The bids for White were all rebuffed and questions marks were seemingly ended when he signed a new long-term contract with the Sussex based side. Despite this new contract some of the bigger teams in the league are still interested in signing White, Liverpool could make a move as they try to replace the injured Virgil van Dijk.

Giving White the armband would show the clubs commitment to him and could convince him that he can progress his career with the club.

Potter does have plenty of choices to choose from regarding the vacant armband. The manager could also consider giving Maty Ryan, Joel Veltman and Dan Burn the armband for the short-term.
