Grant’s Late Strike Denies Brighton - Match Report

Brighton draw to West Brom despite leading.

Draw leaves the Seagull’s 16th in Premier League.

Karlan Grants 83rd minute strike was enough to deny Brighton all three points at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton started the better of the two sides and had the ball in the net inside the first 20 minutes. Adam Lallana played in Neal Maupay with a brilliant chipped pass. The French striker-fired in his effort, but it was ruled out for offside.

This was the start of Seagull’s domination. Maupay had a one-on-one chance saved by Sam Johnstone when he should have scored. Leandro Trossard also had two chances to score, but was denied by Johnstone on one and couldn’t keep the other effort down.

Brighton’s sustained pressure did pay-off before half-time. Lallana had a shot blocked into the path of Tariq Lamptey who played across though the box. Before the ball could reach a Brighton player, Branislav Ivanović cleared the ball into the body of Jake Livermore. The ball rebounded off the Baggies captain and into the goal.

The second half-half started in much the same vein as the first. Brighton were on top and creating chances. West Brom were able to hold on and get themselves into the match before falling further behind.

As the baggies started to get themselves into the match, they had chances wasted by Filip Krovinović and Matheus Pereira as they searched for an equaliser. Heading into the final 10 minutes, Brighton must have thought they were going to walk away with all three points.

This, however, was not the case. On the 83rd minute, West Brom levelled. Robinson played a low cross into the Brighton box for Karlan Grant. The relatively new Baggies was able to take a touch past Adam Webster and rifle a shot past Matty Ryan into the net.

Despite Brighton’s best efforts to reclaim the lead the game would end with the spoils shared. The draw leaves the Seagulls in 16th place in the Premier League, three points ahead of the relegation zone.

Up next for Brighton is a tough match trip away to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday after that will be a six-pointer against fellow strugglers Burnley.
