Southwick 1882 FC move up to third in the Mid Sussex Championship.

The Wickers took the lead three times to beat Polegate Town

Southwick 1882 FC continued to show their quality in the Mid Sussex Championship with a brilliant 3-2 win over Polegate Town.

The Wickers got off to the perfect start and took the lead in the eighth minute. Ben Edwards opened Southwick 1882 FC’s account for the afternoon. It was Edward’s first goal of the season.

Polegate Town did fight back and equalled the scores through a penalty on the 21st minute. The spot-kick was dispatched into the bottom left-hand corner. That setback did not deter the Wickers, however, and the home side retook the lead before half-time.

Tom Robins, wearing the number seven shirt, took his chance to fire the Wickers back into the lead on the 30th minute. It was Robin’s second goal of the season. That was that for the rest of the first half.

The Wicker’s showed great determination throughout the match against Polegate Town.

Polegate Town were not beaten yet though. On the 62nd minute, the visitors smashed in a fantastic free-kick as they equalised for a second time during the match. Generally for a team to throw away a lead twice in the game, it would cause heads to drop, not the Wickers.

On the 75th minute, Jacob Cook popped up with his second goal of the season and Southwick’s third of the afternoon. Polegate was unable to fight back for a third time as Cook’s goal turned out to be the winner.

MAN OF THE MATCH: TOM JUPP

Southwick 1882 FC move up to third in the Mid Sussex Championship only four points off of Holland Sports in first. The Wickers, however, have three games in hand on the current leaders. So a title challenge is undoubtedly on the cards.

The visitors, Polegate Town, find themselves in thirteenth place, joint bottom with Copthorne II with four points.

Next up for Southwick 1882 FC is a trip to Cuckfield to take on second place Crawley Devils, in what could be a massive match for the rest of the season.
